Packing pictures, mirrors, and other fragile items for a move requires careful preparation and the right materials. Without proper packing, these delicate items can be easily damaged during transport. At Boutique Déménagement in Montreal, we understand the importance of protecting your cherished belongings. That’s why we’ve compiled this comprehensive guide to help you pack like a pro and ensure your items arrive safely at your new home.
Step 1: Gather Your Packing Supplies
Having the right materials is crucial to ensure your mirrors and pictures are well-protected. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Heavy-duty moving boxes: Use boxes specifically designed for mirrors and framed artwork. For larger pieces, telescoping boxes can provide extra protection.
- Packing tape: A strong adhesive will keep your boxes securely closed.
- Packing paper and bubble wrap: These materials add cushioning and protect delicate surfaces.
- Cardboard corner protectors: Essential for preventing damage to the corners of your frames.
- Flat foam or cardboard sheets: Ideal for added protection over glass.
- Glassine paper: This smooth, water-resistant paper protects artwork from smudges and scratches.
- Sharpie markers: Use these to label boxes clearly as “Fragile.”
Step 2: Prepare Your Items for Packing
Proper preparation can make all the difference in protecting your fragile items.
- Measure your frames: Before purchasing boxes, measure your items to ensure you get the right size. Boxes should be slightly larger than the items to allow for cushioning.
- Add protective layers:
- For glass-covered items, place an “X” on the glass using masking tape. This helps contain the glass if it breaks.
- Cover the glass with flat foam or a sheet of cardboard, then tape it in place.
- Wrap your items:
- Lay your frame or mirror on a flat surface and wrap it in packing paper, ensuring all sides are covered.
- Add a layer of bubble wrap for extra cushioning, securing it with tape.
- Attach corner protectors to prevent impact damage.
Step 3: Pack Your Boxes
Once your items are wrapped, it’s time to pack them securely.
- Prepare the box: Line the bottom of the box with packing paper or foam for cushioning.
- Place the item in the box: Position the frame or mirror upright inside the box. Avoid laying it flat, as this increases the risk of damage.
- Fill gaps: Use packing paper or bubble wrap to fill any empty spaces in the box to prevent the item from shifting during transit.
- Seal and label the box: Tape the box securely and label it “Fragile” on all sides. Include arrows indicating the correct orientation.
Step 4: Special Tips for Different Items
Different types of artwork and frames may require additional care:
- Unframed artwork: Roll the artwork with the picture side facing outward and store it in a cardboard tube. Avoid bubble wrap, which can create humidity and damage the piece.
- Large mirrors and artwork: For oversized items, use two telescoping boxes to create a custom-fit protective shell.
- Sculptures or irregularly shaped items: Wrap in plastic wrap, followed by bubble wrap, until the item is well-cushioned and protected.
Step 5: Moving Day Precautions
On moving day, ensure that all fragile boxes are:
- Clearly labeled and marked as “Fragile.”
- Loaded upright in the moving truck to prevent stacking pressure.
- Placed securely to avoid shifting during transit.
If you’re hiring movers, communicate clearly about which boxes require extra care.
